Hi there
I have just found this on the web and thought that it would be interesting for anyone, as it allows you to extract all of the info stored in poi.dat to ov2 files . so with this you can edit them and then recompile them all back again

Sorry wont let me upload the zip file !!!!

you can get it here

Wouldn't this be in contravention of the licence agreement which basically states ...you will not modify the Software and/or the Hardware or any part thereof?

Hard hat and ducks away!

Agreed. The POIs supplied with the maps are copyright, so this is a potentially dodgy area.
Let's check and leave the decision to the Admin.

The POIs supplied with the maps are copyright,

Copyright doesn't apply in this case, assuming the POIs are simply being modified for personal use, just as you're free to remix any of the music you buy if you only plan to listen to the remixes yourself, and just as you're free to fix typos in the books you own if the corrected versions will just sit on your shelf.

Copyright would only enter into the equation if the modified POIs were to be resold/redistributed.

Now, if the license agreement for the POI library says that you're not allowed to modify it for your own use, then this would definitely be dodgy. But that's an entirely separate issue to copyright.

We all know that the POIs are full of errors. Imagine if you count on it in an emergency to find a hospital, and the location is way off! So shouldn't you be able to correct faulty data on your own unit?

Users of the new North American maps have noticed that rest areas have virtually disappeared, compared to what was available in the previous version. So instead of rolling back to the previous version and losing all the new stuff, it would be nice to be able to combine the more complete rest area POIs from the older map and edit it into the new one.

These sort of activities are all perfectly reasonable as long as it's done for personal use. I can't see how Teleatlas could argue that it is being financially hurt by someone doing this.

P.S. I'm glad I grabbed the link before it disappeared!

It states that you will not and you will not allow anyone else

to analyze it by means of reverse engineering, to decompile or disassemble the Software and/or the Hardware, or to make products derived from it.

Which to my mind says that you cannot extract information from the software and then re assemble it. The last bit about 'or make products' suggests to me that it applies whether you sell it or not.

I put all this forward as the devil's advocate because I have ditched my poi.dat file all together and made a new one with my own POIs in it, none of which are from TT I hasten to add.

I dont use the inbuilt POI.dat as its rubbish, I just make my own of the ones that i need.
I posted it here just in case someone wants to update the poi.dat and then reuse it.
So if you dont want to use it then dont! otherwise its up to you...

You'd quite probably find whatever you're looking for! smile.gif , but that's not the point... if this site wants to get "inside" information from TomTom or any other manufacturer, it doesn't help if they are seen to be encouraging what the manufacturer see as missuse of their software. Simple as that.

Agreed, but you don't need this software to do that. Other utilities published here before have been able to replace the TT POIs, it's modifying them that is the issue.

Yeah right as if anyone would give a @~*! about the copyright in this case!

As I said above, TomTom might; and if it affected their relationship with the site, then we'd all suffer.

i very much doubt that Andy...in fact I think it makes the TT product that much more attractive as it is customisable. YourNav.com Forum simply gives us users a means to explore the products. Anyhow, I understand and agree with your principle.
